There are, admittedly, a heap of considerations required before you can make a garden shed purchase, such as price vs. quality, what type of shed you want, where it’ll go in your garden and what you plan to use it for.

These considerations and more can be found in our garden shed consideration guide.

There are three main types of garden shed: Wooden, metal and plastic. Each of these offers a unique set of advantages, dependant on your wants and needs.

Wooden sheds can complement almost any garden and are available in both traditional and modern designs. Thanks to being made of galvanised steel, metal sheds are highly durable and sturdy, making them ideal as a secure storage unit or DIY workshop. Plastic sheds are similarly strong but also lightweight, meaning they can be comfortably moved around, in order to find your preferred garden position.

This depends on a number of factors, such as how you intend to use your garden shed, your budget and the space available in your garden. If you plan to use your shed as a means of storage, then a small shed - starting from 4x6 - will be more than sufficient. If your desire is to create a workspace then something bigger would be sensible. Be sure to bear shed size in mind, in relation to the size of your garden.

We also have a guide dedicated to ensuring you make the perfect decision when it comes to shed size!

Metal sheds are brilliant as they offer a level of longevity which is unrivalled by other types of garden shed. Despite being surprisingly lightweight, metal sheds are extremely solid, with this being one of their most significant selling points. Metal cannot be easily damaged and will naturally provide long-lasting protection to any structure. Owners of metal sheds can normally expect to enjoy their outdoor building for well over a decade.

Plastic sheds represent the cheapest option in garden sheds at the present time. Not only are these types of sheds cheaper than the wooden and metal alternatives, but plastic sheds also require virtually no maintenance, saving you further time and money in the long-run. Plastic sheds aren’t prone to rotting, they also don't corrode or develop rust, and cleaning is a simple matter.

There are a number of steps which can be taken when fighting back against rotting wood:

  • Keep your garden shed off the ground - preferably on a rigid foundation. Having a shed above the ground will prevent rain sitting against the outside walls.
  • Treated wood provides extra resistance against rotting.
  • Having your garden shed in a sunny location will enable heat to dry up any moisture after periods of rainfall.
  • Spray water-repellent sealers onto the wood. The more frequently you do this, the better!

Though it does represent a further monetary outlay, a high-quality shed base can add years-upon-years to the lifespan of your shed, making it something which is highly worth considering. A dry and level foundation for a garden shed - which can be concrete, paving slab or eze - is crucial when trying to give your shed the longest life possible!

Yes, you absolutely should consider purchasing a garden shed! Not only are they highly affordable, but owning one will open up a whole world of possibilities. Owning a shed will enable you to clear out the clutter in your house, garden and garage - with the ability to store everything in your brand new garden shed. You may also be able to pursue what you previously couldn’t, with the space offered by a garden shed allowing you to take on hobbies and projects which may have otherwise been inhibited by a lack of space.

We offer a number of excellent garden sheds throughout our wooden, metal and plastic ranges.
